Type of Institution: Public University

Background Information

The Cooperative University of Kenya (CUK) is a public university located in the cozy town of Karen, Nairobi. Its history dates back to 1908 when the colonial government established a cooperative training institute with a focus on the cooperative business model. In 1967, the Cooperative College of Kenya was founded.

The cooperative college would then be officially opened by first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1970. The mission of the college was to train staff of cooperative societies and unions, so that they would effectively manage the affairs of the then Ministry of Cooperative Development. All courses at the college were diploma, craft, and certificate courses.

In 2005, the Cooperative College of Kenya started its first degree course, the Bachelor of Cooperative Business, in collaboration with Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology.
