Background Information

Garissa University (GU) is a public university located in Garissa town, North Eastern Kenya. The institution was founded in 2011 after being upgraded from the former Garissa Teachers Training College to become a constituent university college of Moi University. Garissa University then became a full university in 2017, becoming the first ever public university in the North Eastern region. With a population of over 2000 students, the university has become an important entity in the North Eastern region.

Admission Requirements for Garissa University

To be accepted as a student at Garissa University, students must attain certain minimum grades in KCSE depending on the level of education they are applying for.

Obviously, Degree courses require a minimum of C+ in KCSE. Each degree course has different requirements per subject. You can check the grade requirements for each course in the KUCCPS website.

A Diploma course requires a minimum of C- while certificate courses require a minimum of D.

Admission Requirements for Degree/undergraduate programmes at GU

1. A minimum Mean Grade of C + (Plus) at KCSE and a C + (Plus) in any two science subjects relevant to the area of study, OR
2. 2 principals and subsidiary pass at A – level in science subjects OR
3. KNEC Diploma in Sciences/Applied Sciences or its equivalent from an institution recognized by Garissa University Senate.

This is how to apply for a course at Garissa University:

First, you can apply through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). To do so, you can log into the KUCCPS portal and follow this process to register and apply for a course of your choice at Garissa University.

Secondly, prospective students can apply for courses online through the institution’s admissions portal. This can be found in the Admissions section on the university’s website www.gau.ac.ke

You can also apply by filling Garissa University application form which can be downloaded online. Complete the application form by attaching Certified Copies (by Concerned Institution or Commissioner of Oaths) of Academic Testimonials and a banking slip of non-refundable application fee of Ksh.500-Certificate/Diploma, Ksh.1000-Degree, Ksh.2000-Masters and Ksh.3000 PhD Programmes.
