Social Gospel

Social Gospel is a term drawn from the history of Maritimers. Originating from USA, the term was used by the Maritimers to encourage and support religious platform in Maritime region.

This occurred in late 19th century and early 20th century. The main goal of the social gospel is to provide a heaven on earth. It encouraged people to follow the example of Jesus and obey the Ten Commandments (a Christian perspective which relates to the story of Moses drawn from Christian’s holy book – the Holy Bible).

The social gospel was supported by many religious groups especially the Acadian Catholics in Maritime Provinces. Those who spread the social gospel argued that people had the moral responsibility to change the society and improve people’s welfare by preaching the word of God and encouraging good behaviour among humankind.

The social gospel was spearheaded by priests, pastors, clergymen and other religious leaders who believed that they had the duty to defend and spread the gospel for the benefit of all Maritimers. This term is important for a student of Maritimes history because it teaches him/her about the history of religious position of the Maritimes.
